Obi-Wan Kenobi was originally planned as a film, but with Disney focusing on expanding its streaming content, it was reimagined as a six-part TV series. Despite some divisive reactions, the show became a hit, successfully bridging the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Lucasfilm even delivered an epic rematch between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, featuring the now-iconic moment where we glimpse what's beneath the Sith Lord's helmet.
With another decade between that battle and Obi-Wan’s eventual death on the Death Star, many Star Wars fans are hopeful for a second season that could further explore the Jedi Master's journey, possibly even revisiting his rivalry with Maul.
However, despite Ewan McGregor's ongoing enthusiasm for the role, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has repeatedly stated that there are no plans for a second season—despite strong fan demand and the success of the first installment.
Recently, during an appearance at L.A. Comic-Con, McGregor participated in a fan Q&A and reportedly confirmed (via SFFGazette.com) that Lucasfilm is now "exploring" ideas for more Obi-Wan Kenobi. While we don’t have direct quotes, it's said that the actor expressed his desire to wear Obi-Wan’s Clone Wars armor and reunite with Hayden Christensen.
If a second season does happen, it could potentially take the form of a movie, as Disney is shifting its focus back to theatrical Star Wars releases. This is the most promising update we've had so far.
"I loved, more than anything, getting to know Alec Guinness' work because I was playing him as a young man," McGregor shared last month. "Even now with the series, that’s my personal challenge—if a take feels like him, I’m happy."
He added, "I really hope we get a chance to do another one. Between where the series ended and where Alec Guinness appears with Luke Skywalker, there are still a few stories to tell."
While it's uncertain if we'll see McGregor's Obi-Wan return to the screen, if Disney is looking for a surefire streaming or box office hit, this beloved character could be the key.
