Hulu has found a replacement for Justin Roiland in the animated comedy Solar Opposites.
Dan Stevens, known for his roles in Downton Abbey, Legion, and Gaslit, has been selected to assume the lead role in the series. Solar Opposites was originally created by Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Roiland, who departed the show in January following domestic violence charges.
Stevens will lend his voice to the character Korvo, a grumpy alien who perpetually dons ceremonial robes and claims to detest Earth. Korvo yearns to repair their spaceship to escape to a new planet. Check out a clip featuring Stevens’ debut in Solar Opposites below.
This voice role further strengthens Stevens’ relationship with 20th Television Animation, the producers of Solar Opposites, as he also has a role in their adult animated comedy Central Park, available on Apple TV+. He has also contributed his voice talents to other animated series such as Max’s The Prince (as Prince Charles) and Netflix’s Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
The fourth season of Solar Opposites, consisting of 11 episodes, will be released on Hulu on August 14. Additionally, a Valentine’s Day special is scheduled for next year. The series, executive produced by McMahan and Josh Bycel, was renewed for a fifth season in October 2022.
Roiland was removed from Solar Opposites and lost his producing deal with 20th Animation earlier this year after being fired from Adult Swim’s popular show Rick and Morty, which he co-created with Dan Harmon and voiced the titular characters. Adult Swim, under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella, is currently conducting a search to recast Roiland’s roles, indicating that Rick and Morty may now be voiced by two different actors.
Roiland faced significant professional consequences as allegations of domestic violence emerged, and reports, including one by The Hollywood Reporter, exposed years of troubling behavior. The Orange County District Attorney dismissed the domestic violence charges due to insufficient evidence. Roiland viewed this outcome as “justice” and maintained that the allegations were false.
Hulu has yet to decide the fate of Koala Man, another animated series in which Roiland served as an executive producer and provided a voice role. The show’s eight-episode first season aired in January.
Stevens, who recently appeared in the Hulu limited series Welcome to Chippendales, is represented by CAA and Peikoff Mahan.
