Always Sunny S01E01 – The Gang Gets Racist – Review

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Season 1 Episode 1, “The Gang Gets Racist,” is a bold and outrageous introduction to the world of the Paddy’s Pub gang. The episode follows the gang, made up of Charlie (Charlie Day), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Mac (Rob McElhenney), and Dee (Kaitlin Olson), as they try to determine whether or not they are racist.

The episode is filled with cringe-worthy moments, as the gang repeatedly says and does things that are blatantly racist. The humor is dark, and the characters are unapologetically terrible people. However, the show’s willingness to push the boundaries of what is socially acceptable is what makes it so compelling.

The performances by the cast are excellent, particularly Day’s portrayal of the naïve and dim-witted Charlie, and Olson’s turn as the gang’s lone female member who is often the target of their abuse. The chemistry between the actors is apparent, and their ability to deliver rapid-fire dialogue is impressive.

Despite the controversial subject matter, “The Gang Gets Racist” manages to be a smart and incisive commentary on the absurdity of racism and the people who perpetuate it. While not for everyone, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is a must-watch for those who enjoy irreverent humor and biting social commentary.
