Barry Season 4 Ending Explained | Recap & Review

HBO’s Barry Season 4 brings the series to a close, and it’s bound to stir up mixed reactions among fans. For a while, many viewers had hoped to see Bill Hader’s titular hitman face the consequences of his actions. Despite Barry’s likability, he was responsible for the deaths of several innocent people, including Detective Janice Moss.

Surprisingly, the show takes a time jump and seems to offer Barry a happy ending alongside his beloved Sally Reed. They live in disguise, far away from Los Angeles, with their son John, hoping for redemption. However, as the series wraps up, Barry’s inner demons resurface. This dark comedy leaves fans conflicted, unsure if justice has truly been served in a world filled with morally ambiguous characters.

Barry’s family is kidnapped, compelling him to return to Los Angeles to rescue Sally and John. Unexpectedly, Barry’s former mentor, Fuches, eliminates Hank’s henchmen and reunites Barry with his family. It’s Fuches’ way of making amends for his past manipulation and betrayal. Sadly, Sally decides to leave Barry, urging him to turn himself in.

Sally needs Barry to take the blame for the crimes committed by his acting teacher, Gene Cousineau (played by Henry Winkler). When Barry visits Gene, unaware of his family’s kidnapping, Gene ends up killing him. Gene believes Barry seeks revenge rather than redemption. The series concludes with another time jump, showing Gene in jail. Apart from Barry’s death, he is falsely accused of masterminding a gang war. The twist is that John secretly watches the Warner Bros. film “The Mask Collector,” which portrays Barry as a hero tricked and killed by Gene for going rogue.

The show ends with John wearing an uncomfortable smile, leaving some to wonder whether he sees his father as a hero or if he is in denial about the dark past Sally revealed. Perhaps he learned the skill of denial from his mother. This direction aligns with the cartoony undertones present in Barry. Ultimately, it fulfills Gene’s desire for Barry to become the hero he envisioned when he took him under his wing.

Throughout the series, the theme of fatherhood is central, especially given Barry’s troubled childhood. This is why Fuches could manipulate him and profit from his return from the Marines, where he suffered from trauma. Despite everything, Fuches always had a soft spot for Barry and protected him. Even in jail, Fuches fulfills his promise and gives Barry a reason to live. As a result, Barry flees Los Angeles, seemingly to be with his own wife and child.

In the realm of parenting, Sally’s journey delves into motherhood, presenting a clever twist in the final half of Season 4. Initially, Sally struggles as a mother, but the series takes a turn when a series of tragic events grant her a second chance. Motivated to surpass her emotionally abusive mother, Sally undergoes a healing process. She now teaches high school plays while embracing her role as a loving mother to John, acknowledging the need to move forward. However, an unexpected twist occurs as Sally decides to leave Gene to languish in jail. Revealing the truth would expose her involvement as Barry’s accomplice when they departed Los Angeles, guarding his secrets. Ultimately, this twist encapsulates the lengths parents are willing to go and the sacrifices they make in their pursuit of a perfect world. This is the shared aspiration of Barry, Fuches, Gene, and Sally as they strive for it by the show’s conclusion.
