After enduring five months of unemployment due to the writers’ strike, late-night hosts, including John Oliver, want to set the record straight – it was anything but a leisurely vacation. During his recent appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” Oliver and Meyers celebrated the return of their shows, both acknowledging that the strike had been a trying period.

“Yeah, really bad. I know cursing is off-limits here – let’s call it a damn bad time because, otherwise, what are intensifiers for?” Oliver quipped. “Yes, very bad.”

Meyers concurred, expressing surprise at the prevailing perception that the five-month hiatus was somehow a positive experience for hosts. Oliver shared his exasperation with such assumptions.

“They sure do assume that, don’t they? They assume that almost every – and they assume that reminding you of that might be a pleasant thing for you to hear,” he remarked. “It was incessant, people saying, ‘Well, at least you get some time off; it must feel like a vacation!’ And I, most of the time, did not respond to that. And when I did, I was not as gracious as I might otherwise have been.”

Oliver went on to recount an elevator encounter he had with his wife and a fan who exited by telling Oliver, “Yeah, well, at least you’re getting a nice vacation, that must be nice.”

“I was following them off, ready to say, ‘You’re dead wrong about that.’ Until my wife pulled me back and said it’s not our floor,” Oliver recalled. “I know it’s not our floor! But that’s not appreciating the difficulty of the situation that I’m in right now!”
